Jody's Notes
You can intend one thing and fail to realize tjat everyone else will interpret it in some other way. What was I thinking of? I was playing around with the idea of gifts. That's what I thought I was doing. Really. A tiny box. Something like a heart (you know, something sentimental). A gift that would respond. (Which would be cute, or so I thought.)
My girlfriend at the time laughed at me. When I told her what the poem was about. What I thought the poem was about.
Who knows what the editors of Dirigible thought the poem was about. They never told me.
The poem was republished in my collection The Lust for Blueprints in 2001.

In the small leather box
is something like a heart.
It purrs
if she pets it.
-
The leather is cool
and dark like nightfall.
Inside the tiny box
is something like a heart:
it throbs
but is velvet,
and purrs
if she pets it.

Such delicacy is hard to refuse.
